Mary Cotterell passed away on March 15th in Oregon after her second battle with cancer.

Mary was born and raised in Portland, Oregon to parents Lyle and Helen Carter. Mary attended high school in Astoria where she was an active member of the drum and bugle corp.

Professionally, Mary received her B.A. in Dental Hygiene from Carroll College in Helena, Montana. She was passionate about her lifelong career as a hygienist, and also cherished the years she spent at home with her four beloved children.

Mary raised her young family in Helena during the 1990s before they returned to the Northwest in 2002. Mary was a mother before all else, and family was everything to her. She blessed so many lives with her friendship, hospitality and generosity. She was a woman of faith, and civic-minded. She faced life’s adversities with courage and strength. She enjoyed travelling, and recently made trips to Alaska, Europe and Kentucky.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Brittany Foran (married to Benjamin) and Katherine Hyde (married to Charles); twin sons, Jacob and Eric Cotterell; grandchildren, Gwendolen, Madeline, and Thomas Foran and baby Hyde on the way; sisters, Linda Bounds and Carol Holmberg (married to Howard); brother, Dave Carter; father of her children, Louis Cotterell; and many extended family members and friends. Her parents preceded her in death.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon on April 7, 2021.

    We are deeply sadded to hear about Mary’s passing, even though we knew it was coming. We were happy to have had some time with her at Howard and Carol’s 50’s anniversary event. We hope her family and friends find peace, happiness and love from being part of her life.

    Mary was such a close friend when we were in our high school years. She was very special then and I’m sure that only continued in her adulthood. We had lost contact and not seen each other in person since then. As of just a few years ago we had made contact on facebook. There’s very important people that make up your life and she was one. My condolences to the entire family
