Rogers, Thelma

Thelma E. Rogers
Date Of Birth: 06/29/1921
Date of Death: 01/08/2014

Thelma Evelyn Rogers passed away on Jan. 8, 2014, following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. One of 13 children, Thelma was born to Louis and Mabel Jacobson on June 29, 1921, in Wilmot, S.D. She raised her family in Tigard and Beaverton, before moving to the Hillsboro area, where she died. The daughter of Norwegian farmers, Thelma believed in the power of hard work and persistence and that heavenly rewards were gained by a strong faith in God’s love and forgiveness. An avid gardener, she traded her gardening gloves for oil paints and canvas later in life, sharing the beauty of God’s work by painting scenes from nature. Thelma raised her children while working as a cook, but fatigue never prevented her from putting her children’s needs before her own or stood in the way of getting a full meal on the table at the end of the day. Her cooking and baking skills were legendary among her family and friends. Thelma is survived by her children, Rolland Kane and his wife, Janice, of Saint Helens, Rebecca Verd and her husband, John, of Yamhill and Randy Kane and his wife, Angela, of Scappoose; grandchildren, Kevin Kane, Michelle Bateman and her husband, Joe, and Benjamin Verd and his wife, Sydney; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Gregory Specht; and sisters, Arvilla Hohertz and Dorothy Vosberg. Thelma has been reunited with her husband, Roger Kane, who died in 1953; oldest daughter, Sandra Kane, who died in 1949; and grandson, John Philip Verd III, who died in 2009. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at Springer and Son Funeral Home in Aloha, with graveside services afterwards in Mount Olive Cemetery in Laurel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the Oregon Alzheimer’s Association .
